1. Not having a clear goal.

You might have heard this before…

“If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know where you get there?” Most of us have an idea of what we want to achieve but until you actually sit down and make really targeted goals, you’ll be wandering around aimlessly.

2. Being too perfect.

Perfectionism is a big hurdle that slows progress big time!

I can be a perfectionist sometimes…but I really wish I wasn’t. Sometimes I’m stuck before I start because I’m trying to make my idea perfect. But some of my biggest successes have been when I got an idea and ran with it. It wasn’t perfect but it was good enough.

3. Trying to do it all by yourself.

Running your online business by yourself is a big job, as you might already know.

I still do most of my work myself…but I should outsource more. When I DO outsource, it’s a massive burden off my shoulders. I really recommend it. Even if it’s just small things like getting graphics or articles written, this is where you can really get things done.

4. Not developing skills.

An online business requires you to have computer skills, marketing skills and a whole lot more.

I found that as I learned new skills, like copywriting for example, it helped me write better ads which helped my business grow. You still might be learning how to use your PC or to type.. and if that’s the case, learn it well! Your computer is your tool you use to create your business.

The more skills you can develop, the more help and service you can provide to your customers. Remember though, you don’t have to learn how to use every video and photo editing software..or learn php coding… because like I mentioned above, you can outsource that.

Skills like that can be “borrowed” but skills you might want to develop as an online business owner could be marketing, time management and managerial skills.

5. Not taking action – Don’t wait – start moving towards your dreeam

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes though…because it’s the best way to learn.

To be successful, you’ve got to have a plan. This is true for anything in life, but especially in your career as a personal trainer. In the end if you don’t have a good plan, then how can your clients achieve their fitness goals, and how will you get what you want out of your business?

Without a plan, you may as well be planning to fail. Can you imagine a play without a script, well, okay but even improve has structure and guidelines? Kids’ birthday parties even have plans. Simply put, desired results can not be achieved until you work for it. Therefore, decide what you really want and make a plan for it.

How, though, do you make sure that your plan is more than a mere wish or daydream?

Foresight is first. Where do you want to be? Planning comes from knowing your destination.

You’ve also got to know where you are right now, so you have a starting point from which to plan.

When you can clearly see your present situation and also have your eye on your goal, then it’s easier to address what you may have to deal with in between. Know why you want what you do, because having a reason will make it more meaningful and easier to work toward. Sometimes this question will alter the goal itself. For instance, if someone has a goal of losing 20 pounds, but doesn’t have a workout or meal plan to make it happen, the goal is worthless. If that person targets a 50-pound loss in preparation for something in the future, you can guide him or her towards that goal because you know how to set up a plan for it.

Regardless of if you’re planning for your fitness training business or a client’s training routine, putting everything on paper is best. When a plan is set by pen and paper, it becomes easier for you to grasp the whole idea and make it happen.

Don’t think you’re done once you’ve written out your plan. Take a look at it and try to spot possible stumbling blocks or changes that might arise. Take note of those and think about how you can deal with them. By doing this, you are developing your “plan B”.” Things do not always go as we plan, so it’s best to have a backup plan.

Keep in mind that those who do not plan ahead are bound to trip up. Put it down on wri ting in order for you to clearly see your path towards your goals. Don’t be so stuck on your plan that you cannot change with unforeseen situations that might arise. Don’t just have a plan; have a “plan B,” too.

Once you have your plan, define your fitness marketing strategy and work that plan.

The best way out of a slump is to define a life goal. Once done, you will identify your priorities and the areas of your life that needs improvement. Thereafter, you’ll be able to start along a path of self-discovery and fulfillment. Goal setting may pertain to health, spirituality, finances, relationships, work, hobbies or personality changes. The first step toward achieving your dreams is deciding what areas are most important. It can be difficult if you try to start on everything all at once. You’re more likely to succeed if you choose one priority goal at a time.

The first step to establishing a life goal is to do a little life planning. You might want to write down the basic categories of life, such as health, relationships/family, career, hobbies, finances and behavioral/personality traits. Then you can write down three sentences for each, stating where you have been, where you are now and where you’d like to be. So, for example, under your work goals, you might write… “Where I’ve been: I worked as a secretary at a law office. Where I am now: I am finishing my last year of law school. Where I’d like to be: I want to be an attorney at a law office firm.” You can feel good about where you’ve come from, but you can also brainstorm five short term goals that can help you reach the long term goal of becoming a practicing attorney. You might then list finishing school, taking bar exam study classes, passing the bar exam, interning at a law firm and updating resume.

Once you have everything written down, one predominant life goal will likely emerge. Have you put career first and let your health languish? Or have you been so preoccupied with your relationship that you lost sight of your career goal of running your own business? Look at some of your long term goals and list the short term goals you must accomplish to get there. Then determine an appropriate timeline in which to meet your objectives. For instance, your long term goal might be to run a five-minute mile. First, you must set up a training schedule of 5 days/week. Then, you must try to run a mile without stopping. Then you can try to shave off a minute here and there to reduce your time from 10 minutes down to five. You can try training with weights to feel lighter or change your diet slightly to include more protein and energy-boosting foods. Whatever your plan of attack may be, looking at manageable, written goals will help you accomplish them.

After you discover your life goal, you need to look at what you logistically need to do to complete your task. Do you need to keep your life goal list tacked to your refrigerator or work desk as a constant reminder? Do you need to write weekly short term aims down in your day planner? Do you need cell phone reminders set to keep you motivated during the day? Reminders often help people who are trying to tackle complicated work projects. Also, do you need to hire someone to whom you’ll be accountable? When people are trying to lose weight or achieve fitness goals, it helps to have a personal trainer or work with an establishment like Jenny Craig, as people will call to make sure you’re staying on track and keeping focused. It may also be helpful to reward yourself for your smaller accomplishments as time goes by to keep you motivated and sensing progress.

Learning how to set goals is essential to success and happiness in life. Without personal goal setting, we may feel lost and unmotivated. It’s part of human nature to want to grow, learn, achieve and advance our position in life. Yet so often we find ourselves stagnating and feeling as though we’re unhappy for some intangible reason. More often than not, it’s because you have failed to seek purpose, set goals and strive for something. Here are some practical tips to help you get more out of life and feel satisfied.

One difficulty when people learn how to set goals is finding realistic goals. This requires a bit of research. If an individual wants to be a WBTV reporter, she must look up the job qualifications and see if she possesses them. If she hasn’t completed college, then it would be unrealistic for her to assume she can walk right into the job. If she hasn’t drawn up a resume, she cannot assume she’ll be able to meet this particular goal. In another example, if a person is unhappy in his current relationship, it may be unrealistic for him to set personal goals of finding only professional models to date. While you don’t want to sell yourself short, you need to set attainable goals before raising the bar to achieve even more. Runners don’t try to finish a marathon for their first race — they train, accomplish smaller goals and work their way up to the top!

A person who knows how to set goals also knows that one of the most satisfying parts of the process is recording progress. After creating a written goals list of tasks, he or she can then check off any tasks that have been completed to physically see the success happening. The more check marks are made, the more an individual will feel motivated to keep going and complete the whole list. This personal goal list will also help keep an individual on track. It’s easy to feel lost and wonder, “What now?” And it’s equally easy to feel impatient and wonder, “Why should I even bother finishing?” With a list, the answers are clear.

A life goal list can be quite varied. Some people want to improve their health through dietary modifications and exercise routines. Other people want to manage their time better and have freer schedules. Perhaps it’s an unfulfilling job or a dissatisfying relationship that’s bringing an individual down. A simple “want” is different than a goal. It is not enough to desire change, for without a plan of action, little can realistically be accomplished.

The first step in determining how to set goals is to do an honest assessment of your life. Once you’ve faced the struggles and disappointments in your current situation, you will find the motivation to set short and long term goals and make the necessary adjustments. You can ask yourself, “Is smoking, drinking, drug using, binge eating or failing to exercise bringing me down? Am I working a dead-end job that pays too little, does not challenge me enough or causes undue stress? Is my poor time management and disorganization stressing me out? Do I need a new hobby or skill to keep me occupied? Is my partner causing more unhappiness than happiness, or am I treating my partner unfairly?” Once you’ve spent some time being introspective, you’ll be ready to begin.

At the start of every New Year we sit down and think of New year resolution ideas. We often try to change the negative parts of our life that are causing us the most trouble. We often don’t think of ourselves, but pleasing the people around us who have told us what disgusting habits we have. A lot of the time when we try to stop habits that have become more about pleasing others than ourselves we do not succeed.

Parents can make resolutions to change the manner in which they teach their children. They can make simple changes that will help their parenting skills. Taking on a few resolutions that will change your parenting methods can be very beneficial to children. Changes will be noticed within the home by taking on a few more positive aspects of parenting.

When making changes around the way you care for your children you will find that they are better behaved and more respectful. Resolutions that are geared around children and the way you look after them will completely transform areas of your life. Even if changes are not completely implemented within the year at least you will have made a start.

Simple resolutions such as being careful with the words you speak to your children. Start to recognise the words that are not helpful when spoken to a child. Telling children they are naughty, stupid or bad can affect a child’s self esteem and act as labels.

Try to use positive praise when your child does something well tell them. Instead of watching all the bad things that your child does make a real effort to praise them and notice their achievements. When using positives with your child instead of using negatives many changes will take place.

Try to be more patient, calm and creative with your child. You could do hobby activities like making posters or pictures. Allow your child to express themselves with you and value the inner child that you have inside. When you learn to get close to your child the benefits are endless. Try to explain things to your child rather than shouting at them and try to answer their questions in a positive way.

This year learn to observe patterns of behaviour within your children and ask yourself if it is something that you are doing. Learn to set an example to your child. Children will commonly learn to act out the behaviour of a parent.

Parents that smoke have a higher chance of making their child have the habit when they are older. Weight issues can also arise in children if the occur in parents. Bad habits are often past on from parents to children.

When you look at your future do you see an exciting life worth pursuing? Please tell me you have a vision of the life you desire. The edge you can give yourself immediately in order to live the life you desire is to have a clear vision of it. Without a clear vision of the future you’ll never know where you’ll end up.

Arguably one of history’s greatest achievement experts, Zig Ziglar, put it this way: He says he can take the world’s most accurate archer and within only a few minutes, anybody he’d train could be shooting arrows with much greater accuracy than the archer. Of course, he would put a blinfold on the archer and turn him around three or four times so he’d have no idea where the target was located.

The point Ziglar is making is nobody can strike a target which they’re not able to see? If you’re hoping to get more out of life but do not have a clear vision of what it is you want, how in the world do you expect to get there?

Some will refer to it as goal setting while others might their big dream. However you reference it, it is critical to your achievement that you have a clear goal in mind.

Once you do have a clear vision of where you’d like to be, the next thing would be to reverse engineer the steps necessary to get there. The most efficient means of achieving your vision is to determine where you’re expecting to be and work backwards on what it will take to achieve it.

Allow me to offer you an easy to understand example. I can remember watching the 2008 Olympics. The event being covered was the women’s marathon. It’s a 26 mile run which concluds in the main track and field arena. After running 25.75 miles the runners entered the arena, did a complete lap around the track prior to crossing the finish line. The goal is to cross that finish line which marked the end of a 26 mile race.

Did the person responsible for establishing the marathon route randomly pick a distant point to start the race from the stadium hoping that the starting point chosen would’ve worked out to 26 miles? Or, do you suppose they started at the finish line inside the arena, which included a single lap around the track, and worked their way backwards to find their precise starting point?

Obviously , mapping out a 26 mile marathon would’ve been impossible unless the Olympic committee started at the end and worked their way backwards to find the starting point. Do you see how this can serve as an example of how you can reach your goals?

It’s also important to remind you that taking action to reach your desired destination is critical. Start today, take action immediately. What good is having your vision and reverse engineering the steps necessary to get there if those steps aren’t actually taken.

Goal setting is something that we have been taught since we were young. From grade school all the way through adult life accomplishing our goals is something we strive for. Often the problem is lack of know how. It's not through a lack of effort. Many times it’s usually the approach we take towards getting what we want. We have some tips to help you reach your desires and define what you want better.

1. Write your goals down. It seems a lot of us will try to just remember what we need to get done and that is great. The truth is when you see it written down you tend to put more value on it. Write down what you want to accomplish so you can look at it daily. This will keep you striving to reach them.

2. Always make sure you goals are specific. One of the biggest mistakes people make is making them too vague. It is much easier to reach something when you know exactly what you want or must do. Vague suggestions or desires just give you a chance for failure. Be as specific as you can for greater success.

3. Keep it as simple as possible. Most people who strive for a certain goal do not make it simple enough. Making things too complex can frustrate you and make you give up quicker. By making it simple you are more likely to succeed and want to work harder towards it.

4. If you like, you can also share your goals and ideas with friends and family. Getting the support of others around you is important. They can help motivate you towards your desires. Many times we need an incentive to get us moving. Getting support is important and doing it in advance.

5. Your goals need to make sense as well. Do not make something that is not reasonable. Your goals and desires are reachable, but if you are starting out make it rational. Be sensible and success will be easier. Know what you’re capable of, and do not try to do more than you can.

Goal setting is something that we all need to do sometime in our lives. Short term goals and long term goals are often part of many people's goal plans. Whatever the goal, it's good to run over them periodically. Taking your time and following a simple plan usually works best. Even as we age in life goals never leave us.

A modern phenomenon of today is the use of coaching services. Think of any type of problem and there is a coaching service that will help people with it. There are coaching services to help you advance your career, make a career change, enhance your romance, and even to help you to get in shape. If you can think of a human dilemma, you can be sure there is a coaching service to help people get over it.

Are you finding it difficult to deal with a specific problem in your life? You’ll probably find a coaching service that specializes in that particular problem. Coaching services are great for helping you to identify and get what you want.

One example: Are you longing to change your career but are scared of the idea? A career coach could easily help you to decide what type of career you want and how to get into that career. In this case the first thing you would do is search out a career coach. Don’t worry that your ideal choice isn’t local, as there are anumber of online services. If you hire a coaching service online most of your sessions will be over the phone, with added email support.

When you first start your coaching sessions you will begin to focus on a specific goal. This probably will be your ideal job role. Once you have identified your goal you will next have to identify the challenges you will have to overcome in order to reach your goal.

Your coach will listen to what your objective is and help to provide feedback about how you can reach your goals. They will be right there beside you, helping you work through any obstacles you may encounter. At the end of each step of the program with your career consultants, you will be given a list of things that you need to do before your next session.

With a coaching service, you are advised to push towards your goal by stepping outside of your comfort zone ideal. Now most people do not realize this… but it is often a product of their own doing that prevents them from moving forward towards their goals. People don’t like to move out of their social safety net, and this can work against you if you want to achieve a particular goal.

A coaching service cannot decide what is best for each individual case. However, what it can do is help you work through your own thoughts and obstacles so that you can decide on the best direction for you. And then you can achieve anything you want. It doesn’t make a difference if you are looking to advance your current career, or move into the work force after a long period of being a stay at home parent.

A career coaching service can help you achieve your dreams.

A frequent problem that people run into is deciding how they can continue earning a wage while they pursue their dreams. A career counselling service can help with these types of problems too.

There isn’t any doubt that a career coaching service can help you overcome problems and grab hold of your dreams.

Achieving goals involves setting a clear and specific objective, making a plan of actions to obtain that goal , following the plan and recording our progress (read more at Achieving Personal Goals). This page is about how recording metrics on the activities we want to improve can lead to improvement in our performance and in achieving our goals.

Last year, Veronica Noone started on a regular run with a small sensor attached to her running shoes. The sensor recorded and stored information about her run, including how far she went and how long the run took. This information was transferred to her iPod for later review. The technology that enabled this was the focus of a story recently in Wired magazine, but it carries a deeper, more important message about performance, motivation and goals that’s relevant to general knowledge about setting and achieving goals.

Having access to this kind of information about the activity appears to motivate most people and leads them to want to do it again. According to Veronica, “It just made running so much more entertaining for me. There’s something about seeing what you’ve done, how your pace changes as you go up and down hills, that made me more motivated”. The result is that it’s led to changes in her behavior, to the point that she is running regularly each week now and has started entering races. She believes that the information she receives from her runs has alot to do with her current level of fitness.

The benefits of measuring our progress at whatever we are doing, and specifically when we have set a goal, is that it gives us clear feedback which motivates us, and it shows trends that we might not otherwise detect. We inherently seem to want those trends to move in the direction of improvement, toward the direction of our goal. Without the feedback , we are able to proceed with blissful ignorance about our performance and miss the opportunity to feel satisfaction from any improvements. To spin a familiar phrase, “what you don’t know won’t kill you, but it may diminish the motivational opportunity that knowing your results provides”.

The statistics on this technology has produced another interesting fact. It appears that something happens once someone uses the system 5 times. Once users hit five ‘uses’, i.e. 5 times having recorded their data, they’re much more likely to continue running and uploading their data. After completing five runs, users have gotten hooked on what the data (feedback) tells them about themselves. It seems likely the same results would apply to weight loss, educational goals or anything else that we might track if we are interested in our performance. The lesson: Stick to the plan you set to achieve your goal, and record your results at least 5 times, and you will significantly improve your chances for success.

Another interesting effect has been observed. Users examining the results of their runs invoke what sociologists call the Hawthorne effect. If we are realize that we are being watched , according to the Hawthorne effect we will tend to revise our behavior. If you’re thinking this sounds like accountability, you’re right. You don’t have to actually be watched by another person, but by tracking and viewing the data from your performance you effectively become your own observer, and the principles end up working the same way. It’s inevitable that when your record your results and review it on a regular basis, you will begin holding yourself accountable for those results which will generally lead to better performance.

In studies of weight loss, it’s been shown repeatedly that people who count calories lose more weight than those who don’t. Sound familiar? When you examine your behavior and have a clear picture of what it has been, you become an observer. Another company, Core Performance, has found that workouts in which metrics are recorded (sets, reps, weight lifted, etc) make you fitter, because you will train more precisely and put in more effort if you know you’re going to be seeing your results. Once again, you become your observer and unconsciously hold yourself accountable. Not measuring and recording your results is synonymous with not being observed. Mason Goldbert, co-owner of a fitness club, says “People love to track things. It brings out their competitive spirit.”

Most experts agree goals must be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevent and Time Sensitive). Getting accurate, regular feedback is a perfect example of the “measurable” component.

Veronica’s run that day covered 1.67 miles in 18 minutes and 36 seconds. But it did something far more important. It provided the results from the day’s run, and more importantly it created a starting point against which she could measure future performance. Veronica had run 95 more times since that initial story in Wired magazine, and has logging nearly 300 miles over roughly 50 hours. More importantly, her weight went from a high of 225 lbs to 145 lbs.

What we measure tends to improve.

Goal setting has been the one of the favourite topics of choice for many personal development and self-help gurus – for good reason. Goal setting is a simple yet powerful, powerful process. Not to mention the indisputable benefits it brings you as you get into this process of determining your future.

These are 5 benefits which you will learn after you have finished this article and you are going to view this often-underused technique a necessity for your personal success.

1. Clarity

Ask anyone on the street what they want to do 5 years from now and 98% of them will say… “I don’t know”. Florence Chadwick was the first woman to ever swim the English channel but she failed… just one mile short from the goal – simply because she couldn’t see the shoreline due to fog. She tried again when the fog was gone – and the rest is history.

2. Want your goals. If you really want something, you will be motivated and willing to go through everything to get it.

3. Simplify your goals. Break up the complex ones and work on them individually. As the saying goes, great things start from small beginnings, be comfortable on working on simple ones before you start working on big and complicated goals.

2) Think about what will happen if you don’t take consistent action. Would your life be better or worse? If it could go either way then your goal is not realistic or challenging enough. You have to make your goal the most important thing in making your life better. If you don’t do it you’ll deal with disappointment and frustration.

6. Learn how to effectively manage your time. Know which things to prioritize and make the most of every free time you have.

7. Stand firm on your goals but remain flexible. Always prepare a backup plan for times when you feel like achieving a certain goal may be difficult.

8. Stay positive. Never entertain negativities in your mind. Doubtful thoughts and ideas will keep you from achieving your goal.

Your goals are your goals no one can do it for you. If you want to achieve your goals , you must be determined to see it through. Inconsistency and procrastination are usually nothing more than unrealistic goals that are not important to the individual who set it. Establishing realistic goals that are important to us personally keeps us positive and productive. A goal is all about working toward to change your life. The more committed and determined you are to making your goal happen, the more likely you’ will change your life
